The problem
The ecological problem which is becoming all the more tangible nowadays is mostly due to two factors:
1)The behavior of modern man vis-à-vis the environment and nature and
2)the energy crisis.

The energy crisis is directly connected to the construction of “conventional” buildings which does not take into account the reduction of energy consumption and the emission of harmful contaminants in the atmosphere and for good reason. The turnover of the building sector of global economy is of 3.000 billion dollars and represents 10% of the global economy. Furthermore:
• 1/6 of global sources
• 40% of global energy consumption
• 16% of water
• 70% of CO2 emissions
are attributed to buildings.

Therefore, it is imperative to reduce the energy which is consumed by buildings and the CO2 emissions into the atmosphere which are also responsible for the greenhouse effect. As the morality and the behavior of a person to his fellow humans begins and is cultivated by the family, in the same way his attitude towards the environment and nature begins by the house he chooses to live in. As long as people choose to build in a “conventional” (i.e. irresponsible) way, with no bioclimatic design, with insufficient thermal insulation, with no alternative heating–cooling sources, simply hiding their heads in the sand, the problem of aggravating the environment, which is threatening to displace the human race and even more the next generations, will perpetuate. Complex mathematical models show that the average temperature of the Earth will rise by approximately 0,3οC every decade for the next 100 years, due to the greenhouse effect; an increase which seems insignificant but could lead to significant climate changes with unforeseeable consequences. Another important issue is the impact that the rise of the temperature will have on the sea level. A rise of the sea surface is expected which will be due to the thermal expansion of the oceans and the melting icebergs. At the same time, the allocation of rainfalls will change, floods will increase, storms and in general, extreme weather conditions will be more frequent and more intense.
